Below the hill in Aplomata lies Grotta, where the sea eats deaply into the land. There can be no doubt that earthquakes, landslides and, of course, the rise of the sea level have meant that the appearance is considerably different from that it was in antiquity.
Today, Grotta is an area many tourists select for their holiday as it has quite a few accommodation units most of which have an excellent view of the port and "Portara" temple. There are taverns, bar/café and clubs within a short walking distance, however the area is particularly quiet as very few vehicles can be found there.
