At the southwest of the island one can find Agiassos bay with calm waters even when the north winds are howling. Agiassos was where Marco Sanudo landed on Naxos in 1207; he marched inland and besieged Apaliros, where he encountered stout resistance. The road to Agiassos is asphalt till Alyko beach and sand road after that for about 4 km. There are signs on Pyrgaki beach that lead Agiassos, one can't miss it.
Drivers must be careful when getting there as for about 500m there is earth road of not such a good condition, easily accessible, however, either by car or by motorbike/scooter if driving in low speed.
In Agiassos quite a few rooms/studios have been recently built. Visitors will also find a nice taverna with a lovely view of the entire bay and local cuisine of very good quality.
