It is not only in the Kastro that one can find traditionally built houses. They are found in many places of the capital (Naxos Town) and some villages. They are very well preserved, since most of them are inhabited.
There are innumerable alleys called "sokakia" especially inside the Kastro. They lead to traditional houses, small churches, mansion houses, taverns and small picturesque stores. This architectural structure can be seen in almost all the traditional villages as well. It was the most compact way of building that ensured protection from the extreme weather conditions and excellent communication between the islanders of each village.
